Food that is a gift: Subherban Gardens offers an alternative to the anonymous food supply system predominant in our society. We are a CSA garden, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture. CSA is a local food system based on direct links between growers and eaters, establishing a personal connection and mutual loyalty which is lacking in the lives of many; the direct opposite of the global marketplace touted by many these days. Grower and eater enter into a business relationship built on trust, human relationship and mutual interest. CSA contradicts the cheap food mentality of the corporate marketplace with the realization that quality food is a valuable gift the enriches the lives of those who consume it. Your subscription to Subherban Gardens CSA helps to keep human-scale, local agriculture alive.

We started our CSA in mid 1996 in Danville. In the summer of 1999 we acquired 2.5 acres near Mt. Diablo in Walnut Creek and have been very busy trying to get the new place "up and running."

We have a strong belief in minimizing our impact upon the environment and providing healthy food for our family. Our CSA gives us the privilege of providing others with healthy food, produced in an environmentally sound manner. Through our purchases of organic produce we are also able to support other environmentally minded growers in California and beyond.

We build our soil through the use of composted manures, cover crops, crop rotations, compost and additions of natural fertilizers and mineral powders. No synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers are used on our plants or in our soil. Destructive insects are managed with healthy plants, diversified plantings, beneficial insects, hand labor and rarely, natural sprays.
